Professor Scott Greer welcomes you to SPH and tells you how to prepare for the first week of classes.

Scott Greer :

Welcome to the HMP governance lab podcast. This is Professor Scott Greer hoping you all made it to Ann Arbor or wherever else you are safely and well. I've got a quick update on preparation for the first class. There's lots of stuff going up on canvas, but I wanted to make life easier for you by specifically sharing the program for next week. The first class will be straight into discussion sections with instructors, you'll be allocated and find the link to your zoom session on canvas when it goes live. So don't worry about that. It will be discussion about the public health system and public health policy. We don't want to spend our very limited class time talking through the syllabus. So please read it and listen to the podcast in which Professor Holly Jarman and I discuss its key points. Class in the first week is going to be about the nature of public health in the United States. The extent to which it is a system, the extent to which it makes sense, what is public health and what isn't? To prepare, you want to do two things. All of the readings are on canvas and they're linked in an email you'll all receive, they should not take much time. The first thing to do is to read through the CDC webpage and book chapter on the public health system and essential public health operations, there will be a quiz. It's probably the last time in your lives that anybody will quiz you on the topic. But if you don't know it, you should. If you don't remember it, it's good to revisit as you get back into the groove, and if you know it cold, then it's good to think about its strengths, limitations coherence, whether it's proved fit for purpose. The second thing then is to build on that. Read the media articles and listen to the podcast about COVID-19 in Washtenaw County. The point is to get you into it and thinking about the nature of public health. What do the experiences of Florida and Milwaukee and the advice of former CDC director Tom Frieden make you think about the state of public health in America, about the state of our COVID-19 response, and where it should go? What would you do in their shoes? I'm really looking forward to discussing these topics and getting to know you starting next week. Until then, bye.
